Many times I work at home and I connect to work over a VPN using remote
desktop. When the VPN unexpectedly drops and my RDP session is active (even
minimized) I can't figure out how to reconnect to my existing session. What
happens is that when I reestablish my VPN connection and run RDP again I get
connected to a new session. Can you tell me how to do this?

That probably means that the server hasn't detected yet that the
sessions is broken.

Try to enable KeepAlives, which makes the server detect broken
connections faster.
