I have a remote desktop connection from my laptop to our servers. Last week,
out of the blue, my connection to one of the servers stopped working. When I
tried to connect I would get an error message saying "The remote computer
disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol.
Please try connectiong to the remote computer again or contact your server
administratror". I don't remember if this happend before or after I loaded
an update from Microsoft. This server is running Windows 2000 Server SP4. I
can still connect to the other servers.

Which OS is your client running?
Which EventIDs do you get in the EventLog on the Terminal Server?
Was the update you are unsure about installed on your laptop, or on
the Terminal Server?

I am running XP Pro
I just checked the Event Viewer and all the logs are empty. It looks as if
logging isn't turned on. I checked and Event Log services are running.
The update was installed on the server

That's not good!
Did you install this update from within a TS session?
If so, then I think you should reboot the server.

The update was done from the console not through a TS session.
Is it possible to see what updates have been applied and unapply
them? Like a system restore in XP.

That depends on the update. Check in Add/Remove programs if it's
in the list.

You should always create a full image of your system before
changing *anything* at all. In case you have to go back to the
previous state, like you want to do now.
