We have a Terminal services server and i am trying to set up working from
home using remote desktop on a Win XP Home PC running on a cable modem,

when i try and connect i get an error message relating to the licencing
protocol, can anyone help please,

is it my home PC or is there something on the server that i need to do??

It would help if you would tell us the *exact* error message that you
get. Any EventID and Source from the EventLog on the Terminal Server
would also be helpful.

You need to have a TS Licensing Server, and you must have a purchased
TS CAL available for your client.

the error message that i get is :-

The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the
licensing protocol. Please try connecting to the remote computer again or
contact your server administrator

On the termianal server there is an event in the log :-

The terminal services could not locate a license server. Confirm that all
license servers on the network are registered in WINS\DNS, accepting network
requests, and the Terminal Services Licensing Service is running.

other users are able to connect to the server but it will not let me in. we
have purchase a licence for the TS not sure what you mean by purchsed TS CAL
available for your client.

That's the problem, then: your Terminal Server cannot locate a TS
Licensing Server.
That means that you either don't have one, or it is there but the
TS cannot locate it, or it's there but not activated.
Do you have a TS Licensing Server?
Which OS is your TS running, W2K or 2003?
And your TS Licensing Server? And is the TS Licensing Server
running on a member server, or on a Domain Controller? Which OS is
running on your Domain Controller?

A TS CAL is a Terminal Services Client Access License. Since your
home PC runs XP Home, you need a purchased TS CAL (which must be
installed on your TS Licensing Server. Can you check if you have
available TS CALs on your TS Licensing Server?

I have recently started and have never used TS before, is there a way to find
the TS server and the TS licencing server there are licence packs here?

it's a w2k server and we have 3 other w2k servers.

there are existing remote users who are using the TS daily it's only new
users who cant connct

Logon on to the Domain Controller. This is the server where the TS
Licensing Service is running (if your servers are in a domain).
Open Start Menu - Administrative Tools - Terminal Services
Licensing.

Clients which run W2K Pro or XP Pro receive a free license from the
TS Licensing Server. You can view those under "Existing Windows
2000 Server - Terminal Services CAL Token (per device)" with
"Type" = "Built-in". The important words are "Existing" and "Built-
in".

All other clients, including XP Home Edition clients, need a
purchased TS CAL. Those are called "Windows 2000 Server - Terminal
Services CAL Token (per device)", so without the word "Existing".
Check the values under "Total" (which is how many you bought and
installed), "Issued" (the number of licenses in use by clients) and
"Available" (the number of free licenses).
