I recently upgraded my NT4 domain to 2003.
In the NT4 domain, I had a 2000 Terminal Server, with the licensing server
installed on the terminal server. Everything worked great.
Now it's about 90 days after the domain upgrade and I notice that the
licensing server on that 2000 box no longer functions. I re-installed it,
still nothing.

I've got a user who must have started using a temporary license after the
domain upgrade, that can no longer connect.

Is there somehting I should have taken into account during the domain
upgrade, that I didn't? I wasn't really counting on having problems with the
TS since it was fairly self contained.

If you check the EventLog on your Licensing Server (= your Terminal
Server), you will find the following Event:

Event ID 29
Terminal Services Licensing can only be run on Domain Controllers
or Server in a Workgroup.

Event ID 7024
The Terminal Services Licensing service terminated with service-
specific error 29.

A W2K Licensing Server must run on a Domain Controller. Only
exceptions to this rule are when the LS is a member server in a
workgroup or an NT4 domain.
When you upgraded the domain to 2003, the W2K Licensing Server
stopped working.
You will have to uninstall the W2K LS and install and activate TS
Licensing Service on a 2003 DC. Then call the Clearinghouse to get
your W2K TS CALs reissued and install them on the 2003 LS. A 2003
LS can handle both W2K and 2003 TS CALs.

Thank you for your help. I discovered this last night, and installed the TS
license server on the local DC and that seemed to resolve it. Your post
was great to see though, as it confirmed my suspision, because I do not have
a single install of XP Home to test the fix with.
