Hello to everybody,
I need some help.
I have installed a terminal server 2003 in a windows domain called eric.loc.
I have installed on the domain controller the licensing terminal server .
Terminal server is setted in user mode.
I have installed user TSCALs on the Licensing terminal server.
My thin clients do not belong to this windows domain but are able
to connect to terminal server and are able to work.
Everything is working.
But the question is: how can the thin client get the license if it does not
belong to the specified domain ?

The clients never contact the TS Licensing Server directly. The
client connects to the Terminal Server, and the Terminal Server
contacts the TS Licensing Server to fetch a license.
The license is then passed on to the client.

Keep an eye on the EventLog on your TS to check for errors, but
this should work without problems.

If you want to know the technical details behind the process, I
can't help you further.

If you doubt if this really works: yes, this works. Domain
membership for the client is not required. If you want a more
official statement, read the

Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server Licensing White paper

<quote>
Client License Distribution

All communication during the licensing process occurs between the
client and the terminal server, and between the terminal server and
the license server. The terminal server client never communicates
directly with the license server.....

When a client device attempts to connect to a terminal server in
Per Device mode, the terminal server determines if the client has a
license token. ....
If a client has no license token, the terminal server attempts to
contact a license server from its list of discovered license
servers.

When a license server responds,... the terminal server requests a
Windows Server 2003 TS Device CAL token for this device.
If the license server has available TS Device CAL tokens, the
license server ....delivers it to the terminal server, which then
passes the token to the client device.
